Gladiator by Ridley Scott was epic. With Russell Crowe to kick some ass on the arena, and Hans Zimmer to make even more epic with the soundtrack, the movie won five Oscars and revived the historical genre in Hollywood. The guys from Playtech (known for their licensed slots) just could not miss it, and thus the Gladiator slot appeared.
The game features characters from the movie as symbols, although only the secondary ones for some reason. The animated wild symbol shows a helmed gladiator for a brief moment, but it’s computer graphics and not at all Russell Crowe. Feels kinda cheap.
When it comes to the bonus features, Gladiator slot offers two bonus rounds (one of them ends up as a free spins round with extra stuff), and gamble.
Gameplay
The two special symbols in the main game are the Wild (gladiator helmet) and the Scatter (Coliseum). The first one not only substitutes for other symbols, but also activates the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus (if three wilds appear). Three Scatters trigger Coliseum bonus round.
You heard that right, the game has a progressive jackpot attached to it. When you trigger the the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus, nine helmets appear. They can be bronze, silver or gold, and has different values. Nine golden ones drop a jackpot onto you. It has been won recently, so the jackpot number currently doesn’t look all that impressive (about €120k), but it will certainly grow give it time.

The Coliseum bonus works like this: you’ll see four rows, five stones in each. The stones in the first row reveal the number of free spins you get; the second row - the free spins multiplier; the third - extra scatter (a random symbol from the paytable that will pay as a scatter, regardless of the paylines); the fourth - extra wild (a random symbol that will serve as additional wild). Now, you don’t necessarily get one pick from each row. Whenever you choose a stone, one of the four options is automatically chosen - make another pick in the same row, advance to the next row, open all stones in current column, and collect what you currently have and proceed to the free spins.
Our Opinion
Gladiator slot is not as cool as Gladiator movie, but still pretty good. “Construct your own free spins” feature and Gladiator Jackpot bonus can generate some sweet wins, not to mention the progressive jackpot.
