Book of Dead slot by Play’n Go is similar to another Egyptian-themed slot - Book of Ra from Novomatic. And by “similar” we really mean it blatantly copies most of the symbols, bonus round, and expanding symbol mechanics. Way to go, Play’n Go…
That being said, the game looks better than its “source of inspiration”. The symbols look nice, the animations are smooth, and the background music is cool. The nameless Hatted Guy has traded the hat for a name - he’s Rich Wilde now. When it comes to features, if you’ve ever played Book of Ra, you’d know what to expect from Book of Dead. The Book symbol is both wild and scatter, and triggers the round of free spins.
Gameplay
The main game is pretty standard - 5 reels, 10 paylines, and the Book, that substitutes for other symbols. Whenever three Books appear, you get 10 free spins. Before they begin, the game randomly chooses a symbol from the standard paytable. When this symbol appears during the free spins, in expands to cover the whole reel. Even more - it pays as a scatter, meaning it doesn’t have to appear on adjacent reels, or start from the leftmost one.
“The symbols, the scatter-that-is-also-wild, the free spins with expanding symbol - we’ve already seen it all, in the exact same combination.”
Our Opinion
This is a tricky one. On one hand, Book of Dead slot is cool, and offers pretty graphics, and great free spins mode with an expanding symbol. On the other hand, it’s a shameless rip-off of another slot that we’ve mentioned enough already. Give it a try, chances are you’d like it better that the original.
